The major averages were quiet today as President Trump meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 34 points, or 0.08%, to close at 44,911. The S&P 500 closed down just 65 cents at 6449. The Nasdaq rose 6 points.

Quiet day for earnings, but retailers like Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart and Target will report later this week.

We are also awaiting Fed comments as the central bank members travel to Jackson Hole, Wyo., for the annual economic policy symposium. Fed funds futures are pricing in a roughly 83% likelihood that the central bank cuts rates at its next policy meeting in September, according to CME’s FedWatch tool.

Treasuries were quiet with the 2-year Treasury yield was up a basis point to 3.76%. The benchmark 10-year note yield rose a basis point to 4.33%.

Commodities were quiet as well with oil up 50 cents, gold was flat while bitcoin fell 1%.

The three major averages are coming off of their second straight positive week, which also marked the fourth week of gains out of the last five for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. Small-cap stocks outperformed last week as investors bet on forthcoming rate cuts.
