Wall Street ended a turbulent week on a difficult note Friday as renewed questions surrounding the financing of artificial-intelligence infrastructure collided with another jump in oil prices.

Preliminary closing data showed the S&P 500 falling approximately 1.1%, the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite losing about 2.15%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining roughly 0.36%. [reuters.com]

Technology and AI-related shares were under renewed pressure as investors scrutinized debt levels and the enormous amounts of capital being committed to AI infrastructure. Oil, meanwhile, jumped more than 3% amid Middle East supply concerns. [reuters.com]

That provides us with two very different stories for today’s Diamond and Dog.

💎 Diamond of the Day: ExxonMobil (XOM)

Sometimes the old economy has its day.

ExxonMobil earns Friday’s Diamond after shares climbed 2.46% to $178.98, as energy stood in sharp contrast to weakness in many technology-related stocks. [stockanalysis.com]

The backdrop was a sharp move in crude oil. Oil prices jumped more than 3% Friday, with traders focused on Middle East supply concerns heading into the weekend. [reuters.com]

There was company-specific news as well. Friday’s ExxonMobil investor materials included its third-quarter earnings considerations ahead of the company’s October 30 earnings release. [investor.e…nmobil.com]

Why It Shined

Higher oil prices do not automatically translate into equivalent gains for energy-company earnings or share prices. But on Friday, investors clearly had energy on their radar.

While much of Wall Street was worried about artificial intelligence, an old-fashioned barrel of oil was reminding investors that it can still move markets too.

🐕 Dog of the Day: CoreWeave (CRWV)

Our Dog represents almost the other side of Friday’s market.

CoreWeave shares fell more than 11% during Friday trading, bringing their decline for the week to nearly 25% at the levels reported by Reuters. [reuters.com]

The bigger story, however, isn’t simply the share price.

It’s debt.

Investor attention has increasingly focused on CoreWeave’s approximately $50 billion debt load as hotter inflation data has raised concerns about higher borrowing costs. [reuters.com]

The yield on CoreWeave’s October 2031 dollar bond briefly moved above 16% Thursday, while the cost of insuring against its debt rose above 1,000 basis points to record highs during the week, according to data cited by Reuters. [reuters.com]

Why It Barked

  • CoreWeave fell more than 11% Friday in the cited intraday reporting. [reuters.com]
  • At those levels, shares were headed toward a weekly loss of nearly 25%. [reuters.com]
  • Investors have been scrutinizing the company’s roughly $50 billion debt load. [reuters.com]
  • The yield on its October 2031 dollar bond briefly surpassed 16% Thursday. [reuters.com]
  • Concerns surrounding AI financing also weighed on other companies tied to data centers and AI infrastructure. [reuters.com], [reuters.com]

One clarification is important. Falling bond prices do not suddenly change the interest rate CoreWeave pays on its existing fixed-rate debt. They can, however, provide information about how the market currently views credit risk and potential future financing conditions.
