Wall Street bounced back Thursday, but the recovery looked considerably different from many of the technology-led rallies investors have grown accustomed to seeing.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 556.21 points, or 1.08%, to 52,177.69. The S&P 500 gained 0.33% to 7,744.06, while the Nasdaq Composite managed a gain of just 0.08% to 26,713.03 after falling as much as 1.4% during the session. [apnews.com], [cnbc.com]
Investors continued wrestling with questions surrounding AI-related spending and debt while another inflation report came in hotter than expected. September producer prices increased 1.3% from the prior month and 6.3% from a year earlier, both above cited economist forecasts. [finance.yahoo.com]
Interestingly, even with those inflation numbers, the 10-year Treasury yield fell to around 5.09% late Thursday, nine basis points below Wednesday’s close. [finance.yahoo.com]
Against that backdrop, investors appeared to broaden their interests beyond the market’s biggest AI-related names.
💎 Diamond of the Day: Nike (NKE)
Sometimes an old favorite gets a new pair of shoes.
Nike gets Thursday’s Diamond designation after its shares jumped more than 5%, helping lift the Dow Jones Industrial Average during a session characterized by rotation away from portions of the AI trade. [cnbc.com]
Why It Shined
- Nike shares gained more than 5% Thursday. [cnbc.com]
- The company was among the stocks helping lead the Dow Jones Industrial Average higher. [finance.yahoo.com]
- The advance occurred as Wall Street broadened beyond technology, with money moving into other areas of the market. [finance.yahoo.com], [cnbc.com]
Not every Diamond has to be artificial intelligence. Sometimes an old-fashioned Swoosh will do.
🐕 Dog of the Day: Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)
If Thursday’s theme was investors becoming more selective about technology and AI, Hewlett Packard Enterprise gives us an interesting Dog.
A market-movers screen identified HPE as the largest decliner in the S&P 500 Thursday, down 7.1%. [quant500.com]
And here’s where some context makes this Dog more interesting.
The shares had enjoyed a substantial run previously. The Wall Street Journal’s market data showed HPE still up approximately 134% year to date, despite its recent weakness. [wsj.com]
Why It Barked
- HPE was identified as Thursday’s largest S&P 500 decliner, falling 7.1% in the cited market-movers data. [quant500.com]
- The weakness came during a period when investors were questioning some of the spending, borrowing and valuations associated with the AI infrastructure boom. [finance.yahoo.com]
- Despite the recent decline, The Wall Street Journal’s market data still showed the shares dramatically higher for 2026. [wsj.com]
