Wall Street began the week with considerable momentum before rising Treasury yields again complicated the picture.
Monday produced a powerful technology rally. The S&P 500 gained 1.49%, the Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.26% to a record close, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.71%. Falling oil prices and Treasury yields helped sentiment, while AI-related companies supplied much of the market’s leadership. [cnbc.com], [investopedia.com]
Tuesday brought a more divided market. The Nasdaq Composite added another 0.45% to reach a new record close, while the S&P 500 was essentially flat and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.36%. Semiconductor and memory-related shares provided notable strength. [cnbc.com]
As the week progressed, however, the bond market increasingly commanded investors’ attention. By Thursday, the 10-year Treasury yield had climbed to 5.223%, its highest level since June 2007, while the 30-year yield reached 5.501%, its highest since June 2004. The Dow declined 0.3%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.02%, and the Nasdaq was essentially unchanged. [zacks.com]
What Moved the Markets?
🤖 Artificial Intelligence Remains a Powerful Theme
AI provided some of the week’s biggest individual stock stories.
On Monday, Meta Platforms surged approximately 11%, with investors reacting to enthusiasm surrounding its Muse AI agent, which had reached the top position in Apple’s App Store. Semiconductor companies also rallied, including Intel, which gained approximately 12%, and Advanced Micro Devices, which rose approximately 10%. [investopedia.com]
Then came Friday’s Akamai Technologies news. Anthropic reportedly agreed to a seven-year, $11.6 billion cloud-services commitment with Akamai Technologies, with provisions that could potentially increase that commitment by another $9 billion. Akamai Technologies shares responded with a substantial double-digit advance in early trading. [tradingpedia.com], [stockstotrade.com]
The broader takeaway isn’t that every AI-related investment moved higher. Rather, AI remained an important source of individual company news and market activity throughout the week.
📈 Bonds Return to Center Stage
If AI was the week’s most exciting corporate story, Treasury yields may have been its most important macroeconomic one.
The 10-year Treasury yield was around 4.95% Monday and remained around 4.96% Tuesday. [cnbc.com], [cnbc.com]
By Thursday, the yield had climbed above 5.2%. [zacks.com]
Those moves kept interest rates squarely in investors’ sights following the Federal Reserve’s quarter-point rate increase during the previous week.
🛢️ Oil Takes Investors on a Ride
Energy prices provided another interesting storyline.
U.S. crude fell sharply Monday to around $95.78 per barrel and declined again Tuesday, when oil benchmarks recorded a fifth consecutive down day. [cnbc.com], [cnbc.com]
But the story changed later in the week. On Thursday, Brent crude increased more than 3% to settle near $107, while West Texas Intermediate rose 2.7% to approximately $94.61. [zacks.com]
The swings kept energy prices closely intertwined with the market’s continuing discussion surrounding inflation and interest rates.
