The major averages closed higher to end another volatile week following better than expected nonfarm payrolls data, easing concerns the economy faces an imminent slowdown. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 443 points, or 1%. The S&P 500 rose 61 points or 1.1%, back above 6000 for the first time since February. The Nasdaq rose 231 points or 1.2%.

U.S. payrolls climbed 139,000 in May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, above the Dow Jones forecast of 125,000 for the month but less than the downwardly revised 147,000 in April. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.2%. The 10-year Treasury yield added 10 basis points to 4.50%. The 2-year yield rose more than 11 basis points to 4.04%, while the 30-year bond yield advanced more than 7 basis points to 4.95%.

Yesterday’s better than expected economic data was overshadowed by an extraordinary social media feud between U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk. Shares of the electric vehicle maker, Tesla fell 14% on Thursday as the spat intensified but bounced back 3.6% today.

The tech sector had a good day. The chips were higher except for Broadcom, down, 5%, even as they reported better than expected earnings and guidance.

In the retail space Lululemon and Petco were lower on earnings.

Commodity stock and potash maker, Mosaic, was lower by 4% on earnings. The price of oil was higher by 2% having a good week along with the energy sector. Gold was quiet today, still hovering near all time highs. Bitcoin was higher by 2% hovering around $105,000.

On the week, the S&P and Dow rose more than 1% while the Nasdaq rose more than 2%.
