The major averages close higher for the day and for the month with the Dow closing at record highs even as the U.S. government may shutdown starting tomorrow. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 81 points to 46,397. The S&P 500 rose 27 points or 0.4% to 6,688. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 68 points or 0.31% to 22,660.
The S&P 500 rose 3% for the month. Over the last five years, the S&P 500 averaged a 4.2% decline for the month of September. The Dow Jones gained 1%. The Nasdaq performed well with a 5% gain in September.
Today was also the end of the third quarter. The broad market S&P 500 rose 7% for the quarter. The tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 11% on the quarter. The blue-chip Dow Jones average rose 5%, its fifth straight quarterly advance.
Interest rates did not move much today ahead of a government shutdown. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose a basis point to 4.14%, while the 2-year Treasury yield fell more than 2 basis points to 3.61%. The 30-year Treasury yield rose by more than 2 basis points to 4.73%.
The price of oil was down a percent even as OPEC may face supply surplus. Gold was up half a percent at a record high. Crypto currency was quiet today.
