The major averages closed mixed on the day and the week as Congress ended the government shutdown. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 309 points, or 0.65%, to settle at 47,147. The S&P 500 fell 3 points to 6734 while the Nasdaq Composite rose 30 points, snapping a three day losing streak, after falling 400 points in the morning session. Today’s recovery comes after the worst one-day performance since Oct. 10 with the Dow falling about 800 points while the Nasdaq fell 2%. For the week, the Nasdaq fell 0.5% while the S&P 500 and the Dow gained 0.1% and 0.3%, respectively.

The tech sector was headed for an ugly week only to recover from the morning lows. Micron led the rally up 4%, dragging the sector with it. Many of the big cap techs like Apple, Google and Amazon still finished in the red.

Thursday posted their worst one-day performance since Oct. 10. The 30-stock Dow lost about 800 points, taking back gains seen in Wednesday’s session when it crossed the 48,000 level. The Nasdaq plummeted more than 2%, as technology giants came away battered.

While techs slumped, healthcare stocks rebounded as the sector rose 3%.

Interest rates rose as investors await an onslaught of economic data with the government shutdown ending. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 3 basis points to 4.14%. The 2-year note yield advanced 2 basis points to 3.6%. The 30-year bond yield rose 4 basis points to 4.74%.

In the commodity space, oil rose 2% as Ukraine attacked one of Russia’s largest oil export ports. Gold was down 2%, but remains above $4000 while crypto currencies continue to take it on the chin giving up most of their gains for the year.
