Geron Corporation (GERN)Geron Corporation lost over half of its value today, down 55.86% at $1.28. The pharmaceutical company saw its shares get demolished after announcing two setbacks for its experimental cancer drug, imetelstat. Geron ended a mid-stage trial of imetelstat as a treatment for breast cancer because women who were treated with the drug were not doing as well as those who were treated with only a standard chemotherapy drug. The company said women who were treated with imetelstat and paclitaxel had a shorter time to death or disease progression than patients who received only paclitaxel. Geron won't be curing cancer with this trial, and shares are showing the disappointment down to a new 52-week low.
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (GMCR)
Green Mountain gave investors a buzz today, up 9.09% at $30.36. The company saw its shares continue to rally today after announcing late last week that would release a new line of health drinks. The maker of the Keurig single-serve coffee system and its related coffee pods announced Thursday that it will soon roll out coffee, tea and fruit drinks that include antioxidants and vitamins which are intended to appeal to today's more health-conscious consumers and diversify its product line. Green Mountain is expecting to double the number of Keurig's in use in the US, to around 25 million, over the next two years. Shares were trading at 3 times its average volume, at 20 million shares today.
