Why he’s in the news. NIKE, founded by Phil Knight, the chairman emeritus, is back in the spotlight today as the company prepares to release its fiscal first-quarter 2027 financial results after the close of regular trading. The report comes as investors continue to follow the company’s efforts to navigate challenges in its global business and reposition the brand. In its previous quarterly report, NIKE said full-year fiscal 2026 revenue was $46.4 billion, essentially flat on a reported basis, while fourth-quarter revenue declined 1%. That makes today an appropriate time to look back at the remarkable story of the man who helped start it all: co-founder and chairman emeritus Phil Knight. [britannica.com]

Fun Fact: Before NIKE, There Was Tiger

Phil Knight’s story did not begin with the famous Swoosh.

After attending the University of Oregon and earning an MBA from Stanford University, Knight pursued an idea that Japanese running shoes could compete successfully in the United States. He eventually obtained the U.S. distribution rights for running shoes made by Onitsuka Tiger, now known as ASICS. [leadingculture.co.nz], [britannica.com]

Knight and his former Oregon track coach, Bill Bowerman, subsequently founded Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964. The business initially distributed Onitsuka Tiger shoes before eventually developing its own footwear and becoming NIKE. [britannica.com]

And where did that now-famous name come from?

Nike was the Greek goddess of victory. The company adopted the name when Blue Ribbon Sports became NIKE in 1971. [en.wikipedia.org], [greekreporter.com]

Why We Find It Interesting

Phil Knight’s story is particularly interesting on a day when attention is again focused on NIKE’s business performance.

Long before NIKE became a global brand, its co-founder had an idea about running shoes, secured a relationship with a Japanese manufacturer and, together with his former track coach, started a company called Blue Ribbon Sports. [leadingculture.co.nz], [britannica.com]

Businesses inevitably encounter periods of change and challenge. Knight’s journey is a reminder that some of the most recognizable companies in the world began with little more than an idea, persistence and a willingness to keep moving forward.
