Why We’re Talking About Him Dr. Robert Cade

Sixty years ago, a question about football players struggling in the Florida heat helped launch what would eventually become one of the world’s best-known sports drinks.

In 1965, a group of University of Florida physicians led by Dr. Robert Cade studied why Gators football players were having difficulty staying properly hydrated. The researchers developed a drink designed to replace fluids, electrolytes and carbohydrates lost during strenuous activity. Appropriately, they called their creation Gatorade, after the university’s Gators. [pepsico.com], [floridagators.com]

The product eventually became part of Quaker Oats, and when Quaker joined PepsiCo in 2001, Gatorade became part of the PepsiCo portfolio. [pepsico.com]

Fun Fact: A True Renaissance Man

Inventing Gatorade was hardly Dr. Robert Cade’s only interest.

Those who preserve his legacy describe him as a scientist, musician and poet who also bred roses. That combination is wonderfully unexpected for a physician best remembered for changing sports hydration. [flamingomag.com]

Dr. Cade was a nephrologist and professor at the University of Florida, but his curiosity apparently stretched well beyond medicine. That’s why “Renaissance man” seems like a particularly fitting description. [flamingomag.com]

Why We Find It Interesting

There’s something wonderfully uncomplicated about the beginning of the Gatorade story.

A coach noticed a problem. A physician became curious about it. A team of researchers investigated it. And their attempt to help a group of college football players cope with the Florida heat eventually grew into a brand recognized around the world. [pepsico.com], [floridagators.com]

Dr. Robert Cade’s story is a reminder that big innovations sometimes begin not with an elaborate business plan, but with curiosity and a willingness to ask, “Why is this happening?”
