The major averages closed mixed with the Dow Jones Industrial Average having a record-setting session, boosted by strong earnings reports from companies such as Coca-Cola
and 3M. The Dow Jones rose 218 points or 0.47% to 46,924. The S&P 500 inched up 22 cents while the Nasdaq fell 36 points to 22,953.
Coca-Cola and 3M supported the Dow’s gains, surpassing Wall Street’s estimates, jumping 4.1% and 7.7%, respectively. Former Dow component, General Motors jumped 14% after hiking its guidance for the full year and topped estimates.
Other companies reporting earnings included Zions Bancorp, Lockheed, Paccar, GE Aerospace, Northrop, Phillip Morris, and RTX. Phillip Morris was a dog down nearly 4%. Lockheed was also lower.
Interest rates were modestly lower dipping further below 4% with the 10-year Treasury yield now at 3.96%. The 2-year Treasury is now at 3.45%, while the 30-year bond yield decreased more than 3 basis points to 4.54%.
In the commodity space, oil was modestly higher, but still below $60 a barrel. Gold took a hit down 5%, its biggest drop in five years. Silver was down even more, down 6%. Crypto currencies were quiet today.
