The major averages finish higher for the day, but down on the week as the S&P 500 snapped a 3-week winning streak on tame inflation numbers. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 299 points or 0.65%. The S&P 500 rose 38 points or 0.59% while the Nasdaq Composite rose 99 points or 0.44%.

The August personal consumption expenditures price index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure, showed that core inflation excluding food and energy came in at 2.9%, in line with what economists polled by Dow Jones. The 10-year Treasury yield rose a basis point to 4.18%. The 2-year Treasury yield ticked down 2 basis points to 3.64%. The 30-year Treasury bond yield rose a basis point to 4.75%.

The markets and most sectors were modestly higher today. Intel had a good day, week and month as investments come in from the US government, Nvidia and possibly Apple. Oracle was a dog in the tech space, down 2%, but has performed well this month up over 20%.

On the earnings front, Costco fell nearly 3% on earnings weak guidance and higher tariff related costs. The rest of the consumer discretion acted much better.

In the commodity space, energy and oil had a good week, up half a percent today and up 4% on the week. Gold had a good day and week making a new high in the last five days. Crypto-currencies were mixed but solidly lower on the week.
