Exactly 55 years ago today, on October 13, 1971, Intel went public.
The semiconductor pioneer offered its shares at $23.50 apiece. Since then, Intel has completed 13 stock splits, with the original IPO price equivalent to approximately two cents on a split-adjusted basis. [intc.com]
It’s an interesting anniversary considering just how central semiconductors have become to today’s conversations surrounding computing, artificial intelligence and global technology competition.
Tuesday’s Market
Wall Street spent much of Tuesday digesting the opening round of third-quarter corporate earnings.
The S&P 500 finished essentially flat, slipping 0.02% to 7,805.45. The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.15% to 27,204.38, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 180 points, or 0.35%, to 51,670.10. [apnews.com], [cnbc.com]
Bank earnings produced mixed reactions, while semiconductor stocks were pressured amid concerns about valuations and increased memory-chip competition from China. [cnbc.com]
Healthcare produced two particularly interesting stories.
💎 Diamond of the Day: UnitedHealth Group (UNH)
UnitedHealth Group earns Tuesday’s Diamond after reporting third-quarter results that exceeded analyst expectations and raising its full-year profit outlook.
The company reported adjusted earnings of $4.69 per share, compared with an LSEG consensus estimate of $4.14. Revenue totaled approximately $112.7 billion, versus expectations of $111.4 billion. [cnbc.com], [unitedheal…hgroup.com]
UnitedHealth also increased its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings outlook to at least $20.50 per share, up from its prior $19.50-to-$20 range. [cnbc.com], [unitedheal…hgroup.com]
Why It Shined
- Adjusted Q3 EPS was $4.69, ahead of the cited $4.14 consensus estimate. [cnbc.com]
- Revenue of approximately $112.7 billion also exceeded the cited consensus estimate. [cnbc.com]
- The company raised its full-year adjusted earnings outlook to at least $20.50 per share. [unitedheal…hgroup.com]
- Its medical care ratio improved to 88.4% from 89.9% a year earlier. [cnbc.com]
One wrinkle is worth mentioning: after an initially favorable reaction, UnitedHealth shares ultimately finished Tuesday approximately 0.2% lower. [cnbc.com]
I still think it works as our Diamond because we’re highlighting the corporate results rather than simply selecting the day’s largest gainer. To keep that transparent, I’d call it our Diamond “for its earnings report” rather than suggesting the stock itself was one of Tuesday’s winners.
🐕 Dog of the Day: Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)
Our Dog also comes from healthcare, and this one practically writes its own headline.
Johnson & Johnson shares fell approximately 6% Tuesday, despite the company reporting quarterly earnings above expectations and raising its full-year outlook. Investors instead focused partly on softer results from its MedTech operation, where revenue growth fell short of expectations. [zacks.com], [gurufocus.com], [finance.yahoo.com]
Then there are those hips and knees.
JNJ has been considering what to do with its DePuy Synthes orthopedics operation, which makes products used in hip and knee replacements. CFO Joseph Wolk told The Wall Street Journal Tuesday that the company was “leaning” toward spinning out the business, rather than pursuing an outright sale. [wsj.com], [finance.yahoo.com]
Why It Barked
- Johnson & Johnson shares fell approximately 6% Tuesday. [finance.yahoo.com]
- The company’s MedTech division generated $8.64 billion in revenue, up 2.5%, but below expectations according to the cited analysis. [zacks.com]
- Johnson & Johnson is evaluating alternatives for DePuy Synthes, including a potential spin-off. [wsj.com], [finance.yahoo.com]
- The orthopedics operation includes products used in hip and knee replacements, among other applications. [finance.yahoo.com]
And because we can’t resist just a little fun with this one:
Perhaps Johnson & Johnson is taking a page from Elvis and looking for a new way to position those hips and knees.
Thank you very much. 🎸
Joking aside, I’d immediately follow that line with the serious point: a spin-off or sale remains a strategic possibility rather than a completed transaction, and the eventual structure and financial outcome remain uncertain.
