The major averages pulled back into the close as White House said tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China would start on Saturday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 337 points, or 0.75% after being in the green this morning. The S&P 500 fell 30 points or 0.5% while the Nasdaq fell 54 points or 0.28%.
Stocks gave up their earlier gains after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Friday afternoon that the president's tariffs will be available for public inspection at some point Saturday. Trump will be leveling 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, alongside a 10% duty on China. At its session highs, the Dow was up 170 points.
For the week, the Dow finished down a percent. The S&P 500 was modestly higher up 0.3% while the Nasdaq Composite ended down 1.6%.
Friday also marks the last day of a volatile January. The three major averages posted monthly gains, with the S&P 500 rising 2.7% and the Nasdaq advancing 1.6%. The Dow outperformed in the period, jumping 4.7%.
Tech was in focus this week as China came up with an alternative to ChatGPT without spending millions on Nvidia chips as far as Wall Street knows. Nvidia fell 17% on Monday on the news and finished with a weekly loss of 15%.
A number of other techs were in the spotlight this week following earnings including IBM, Meta, Apple, Intel, Tesla and many more. IBM was a bright spot up around 14% on the week.
